Challenging Word Problems for the Primary Mathematics series provides not only ample practice of graded exercises for students of mixed abilities but also offers better math students with challenging questions. This series is written to supplement and complement Singapore’s Primary Mathematics textbooks, both U.S. and Standards Editions, distributed by Singapore Math Inc.® for use in the U.S. and Canada.
Adopting a topical approach in which mathematical concepts and skills are taught and reinforced, Challenging Word Problems is a six-book series for Primary Mathematics. The series, with one book for each level 1-6, serves to improve students’ problem-solving skills and enhance their mathematical reasoning.
The Challenging Word Problems series is recommended as a source of challenging problems for capable students and complements the Primary Mathematics series. They can also be used with any math curriculum, as long as the students have the necessary computation skills. Problems can be selected from it for a daily challenge for the class discussion, or capable students can attempt the problems independently. Do not expect even capable students to be able to answer all the problems without any assistance. Students will have to apply a variety of problem solving strategies, including using concrete manipulatives as needed. Though solutions are provided at the back, a specific strategy is not required, and alternate methods are quite possible to arrive at the answer. They are a good source of problems where students can practice explaining their reasoning or demonstrate their problem-solving abilities.
Each book in the series features the following:
